The Taurus PT-1911 is everything a modern rendition of this classic design should be. It sports a myriad of features that are normally only found on high end custom 1911's, but for Taurus, they simply made those options standard making this 1911 design a cut above the norm, especially in it’s price range.
There are enough changes in the PT-1911 to almost consider it a whole different pistol altogether. That being said, the PT-1911 is in every aspect a Spec 1911; meaning that should you ever have the itch to swap something out (a situation that is rather common among 1911 owners), you will be able to purchase parts from any of the major parts suppliers (Brown, Wilson, Kimber, etc...) and they will require only the same fitting process as any other 1911 parts swap. The primary dimensions of Taurus product are the same as any series 80 1911.
The Internal parts are almost all of the MiM process, like many 1911 that sell for around a grand. But the slide, frame and barrel are forged from ordinance grade steel and hand fit. Taurus is an industry leader in the MiM process however and a google search of Metal injection Molding will turn up articles and websites about Taurus’ role in powdered metallurgy. And not only the firearms portion, they make components for MANY different industries and are considered a “go-to” company in this field.
That being said the finish on the blued model leaves MUCH to be desired, it is very thin. So unless you plan on refinishing the weapon with a sterner material (Like I did with “Bear Coat”), I would go with the PT-1911SS [Stainless Steel]. Another common problem with this particular weapon is it’s ambi-safety. But I am not a fan of ambi’s on any 1911 as long as it is of the type that “snaps” together at the grip safeties pivot point, it’s simply a poor design no matter who makes it. I changed mine out (which was inexpensive and a snap to do on my kitchen table using Wilson parts) before any problems showed up on my weapon. The fit is solid, but not to tight; this is after all NOT a target 1911, but a combat 1911. It is expected to WORK when you reach for it... every time.
The only thing that keeps this weapon from being a perfect 10, is it's thin finish. But this can be remedied with their Stainless Model, or a new finish. |

Performance of my weapon is superb. I have fired everything form HP’s to wadcutters, to Ball and even mixed in a few empty cases in my mags just to see if it would feed those as well. It has fed everything I have cared to put down the pipe and has produced excellent sub 2" & 3" combat groups at 15 yards with said ammo (except the empties, of course). I have not ever experienced a FTF with this weapon, and there was never a need for a “break in period”. It has earned it’s place on my bedside table defending my family should it ever be called upon to do so.
